What Does “Success” Mean To You?

Over the last several weeks, I’ve gotten back into my Law of Attraction and Power of Positive Thinking mode. I’ve taken time to reflect on the word “success” and what it means to me personally.

Everyone has different goals in life – some people want wealth, some people strive to become a better person while others wish for nothing more than good health and longevity in life. Regardless of your personal goal and vision of what success is to you, everyone needs a plan.

No one becomes successful overnight – even if you buy the winning Powerball ticket this weekend, you might become rich overnight – but would that make you successful?

Overnight success just doesn’t happen – especially when applying the same values to making money and with internet marketing.

When you see people making thousands of dollars per day or month, you may feel the urge to follow suit in hopes of achieving the same level of success. It’s easy to get inspired and energized in the beginning, but when the vision of success doesn’t come quickly, many get frustrated and give up.

What I encourage everyone to do is look at the history of that successful person. Look at archives to see how long they have been doing what they do. Most times what you’ll find is years of dedication – hours upon hours of hard work.

What is your definition of success? Are you working toward a specific goal or do you feel you may be losing steam? Share your thoughts – inspire others with your energy or be inspired by those staying on course.

basic math Chances are, you aren’t nearly as successful at affiliate marketing as you want to be.

Am I right?

In all my years of reading tips and ‘secrets’ that were being revealed by the most successful affiliate marketers, the suggestion of shifting mindset has been the one that stuck with me most. I can’t remember where I originally read it, but I’ve seen similar suggestions pop up over the years – each with their own twist on the concept.

Here’s mine… Think and work backwards!

Before you ever begin a marketing campaign, identify your end goal.

Answer this… Why are you working as an affiliate?

You’re in it to make money!

The economy is tough! You might need supplemental income – you might need a job period. Maybe you’re working your way up to a full-time income so you can leave the normal daily grind. Whatever the case may be – in the end, it’s about the money.

Making car payments, mortgage, monthly bills, vacations, health care, child care, school, blah, blah, blah.  There are hundreds of things that factor into the overall cost of living for everyone.

The first thing I’m going to ask you to do is sit down and put your own expenses on paper. By doing this, you will be able to determine exactly what it will take for YOU to live free of financial worries. Free from always having to know exactly how much things cost, and worrying about how you’ll pay that next bill… You get the picture.

Working from home sounds great doesn’t it? I’ll be the first person to stand up and say it’s wonderful! I love working from home and wouldn’t want it any other way – but I will also tell you it’s one of the most difficult things I’ve ever done.

Check this out:

I have set aside 6 hours a day to really get going with Internet Marketing. I felt I needed to do this after spending the last year or so observing and dabbling on and off without serious intent.

I’m a week and a half in and looking at my time management: well to put it politely it sucks big time!

Just in the last 3 hours, I’ve made several cups of coffee and sandwiches I don’t really want, I’ve been to check on the dog and ended up blowing 20 minutes playing ball in the back garden with her. Also I’ve picked up my guitar to strum out a tune. Twice. And I’m not even a good guitarist.

I’m not sure if this is a lack of focus, procrastination or just a fear of failure stopping me from really hitting it.

So how do you maintain focus with all the distractions around.

That’s so common! And it only gets worse.

Wait until people you know begin to get those bright ideas that since you work from home, you have tons of free time during the day to assist them with their mundane chores, errands or needs. That’s when it gets most difficult.

The phone rings throughout the day with people wanting to chit-chat because they have the day off or may be at home sick and bored.

The Top 7 Work at Home Distractions Are:

  1. Family Obligations
  2. The Munchies
  3. Too Much Sleeping
  4. Procrastination
  5. Unnecessary Phone Calls
  6. Television
  7. Facebook, YouTube, Twitter or Skype

Sound about right?

So HOW on EARTH does a person stay focused and get anything done when working from home?

Let me tell you — I am formally diagnosed OCD and Adult ADD. That’s what I like to call “Perfectly Distracted.” It was extremely tough finding my groove and still poses a major challenge some days.

I’ve always believed and LIVE – "success comes out of necessity" – When you NEED to stay focused you will.

Create a target, a goal – something you NEED – not just the things you WANT.

For me – that was being able to raise my twins on my own. I hated turning for help from my parents and knew I’d never get help from their dad – so I never counted on that. That was MY big motivation.

I learned of the 20 minute timer method – that didn’t work. I had twins, a dog and the attention span God gave a mushroom.

What worked for me was an organized blog binder.

I shared details of what I learned and how I put my binder together for a "not mine" blog here: Organize Your Blogging Business With A Blog Binder

While my method is focused more on blogging – it can easily be customized to suit your own projects and goals.

Are you a work at home veteran? What are some tips you’ve learned to get and stay focused?

Not a veteran and need help? What are some of the distractions you struggle with most?
