How much do you make per hour?

paycheck When you’re asked how much you make per hour, generally you will think about how many hours you work at you job, then divide it by your salary to arrive at your per hour total.

For someone like me, an online marketer, working for myself, the mindset is entirely different.

Online marketers are not limited to how many hours they work, but how much money they can make.

Instead of looking at my day as a set number of worked hours, everything is scaled to a full 24 hours.

If you are a self employed affiliate marketer and making $60,000 a year, you are essentially making $6.85 per hour. (8,760 hours in a year X $6.85 = $60,000)

When you work for someone else, you are limited to how much you can actually make. You can only get promoted so much – you can only work so many hours. That’s it. Limitations are everywhere.

The potential in making money online is however, endless.

When looking for your next job do a little math. Would it be better to make $15 an hour working for someone else, or making $3.50 every hour, every day online?

Let’s take a look:

$15 per hour x 40 = 31,800 per year
$3.50 per hour x 8,760 = 30,660 year

For me, the current minimum wage in Indiana is $7.25 per hour. If I were able to maintain that minimum wage per hour working for myself online, I would make over $63,500 per year! ($7.25 x 24 hours a day)

When you first begin setting goals for yourself, try not to focus so much on the really big picture of $100,000 a year, but more of how you can start making $5 to $20 a day, online, consistently, and even automated.

Don’t forget that making money online happens 24 hours a day, every single day, all year long. There is NO such thing as 40 hour workweek limitations!

When you break it down with a target of how much you want to make per day, your goals will seem far more achievable. Begin there and gradually work toward the $100,000 per year goal and beyond.

Finding Success in the Worst of Times

affiliate marketing economy How many of you have questioned whether you could make money with affiliate marketing during the toughest economical time we’ve seen for generations?

I admit, I’m guilty of making comments like “when the economy tanked, so did my profits.”

The problem is was my being stuck in a rut of talking about the same old topics, the same old products, the same old services and not keeping my eye on the proverbial ball.

Let’s think about it for a minute – when times get tough and money gets tight, what are the first things you give up?

Doesn’t it seem to reason that if you give up certain things, other people are probably giving those up too?

During the toughest times, some of the habits I’ve noticed are:

  • Consumers look for ways to make clothes last longer or alter thrift store purchase versus paying full price for new clothing items.
  • Consumers look to maintain or repair their big ticket items (i.e. cars, furniture, carpet, appliances) more rather than purchasing a new
  • Consumers look for home remedies to treat common ailments versus going to the doctor and taking expensive prescription medication
  • Consumers look for more affordable ways to entertain their families at home versus going out to eat and paying for entertainment away from home.
  • Consumers who may have lost their jobs are looking for jobs, resume services, educational tools to enhance their professional resume

Just to name a few…

Now, looking at those scenarios, think about the various ways you might leverage those factors as as an affiliate marketer.

The fact of the matter is, the economy is always changing the way people spend their money, and no matter how tough times get, people will always spend.

The same holds true for online marketing. Whether your existing affiliate partnerships are holding back on advertising (not the smartest thing to do), or whether customers are buying cheaper or used products through Amazon or eBay, consumer spending will always be there.

The way I look at it is there three things are certain: taxes, death and consumer spending.

Whether the economy is doing well or has tanked, some companies will always have a significant customer base. It’s your job as an online marketer to position yourself smack dab in the middle of those companies and their customers if you have any hope of succeeding.

Not sure what companies those might be? The place I always start is the stock market. If a company is consistently showing profit and their stock is leveraged, chances are they’ve got happy customers with healthy spending habits.
